High Quality Furniture Construction
Our high standard of construction quality is reflected in the style, comfort, and durability of our furniture.
Cushioning
Edgecombe offers custom-blended cushions that deliver softness and shape retention. We set a minimum density requirement for the standard foam used in our seating to ensure the best in comfort to our clientele. We manufacture our special cushions using the highest quality materials such as down, natural feathers, innersprings, and high resiliency flexible polyurethane foam safety as well. All of the foam we use meets fire safety standards outlined in California TB117, giving us the edge not only in quality, but safety as well.
Spring Systems
While construction standards have changed to meet varying demands, the comfort and durability offered by our spring systems remain unparalleled in the industry. Our furniture features a NoSag® spring system that provides durability, comfort and longevity. Our eight-way hand tied-springs provide balance and weight distribution to guarantee a more even “sit,” and a more luxurious feel.
Frame Construction
Every frame that our experts build reflects our 80 years of experience, and stays true to the craftsmanship on which our name was founded. Our hardwood frames are built with mortise and tenon joinery, with glued corner blocks to help your furniture retain its durability and timeless elegance.
Computer Aided Manufacturing Design
Efficiency is at the core of our operation, and we pass the cost savings on to you. Edgecombe uses sophisticated design systems to increase material yield, efficiency, and reduce waste. Not only are we committed to providing our customers with original furniture designs; we want to do our part to conserve the precious natural resources that make our quality work possible.

History
In 1930, Businessman Ellis E. Phillips, Sr. was more optimistic about the future than many business people of the depression era, when he founded Cotton Belt Mattress Company in Rocky Mount, NC. The original factory manufactured cotton mattresses that were sold and delivered up and down the East coast. In 1932, the factory was moved to Pinetops, NC, its current location, where the company increased its production to include inner spring mattresses and studio couches.
The company’s name shortened to Cotton Belt, Inc. as other products were added to the line such as sleepers, sofas, chairs and recliners. In November of 1935, the company experienced a setback. Cotton Belt’s building burned to the ground, incurring a colossal loss. The building was nearly destroyed, but the company quickly picked up the pieces and continued its operations.
Over the years, the business that started as a small specialty manufacturing shop, has evolved into a large manufacturing operation with a greatly expanded line of products. It now manufactures a full line of upholstered contract furniture called Edgecombe Furniture. The mattress division includes a full line of bedding called Sleepworthy.
The Cotton Belt, Inc. enterprise spans four generations. Ellis E. Phillips, III is now president, and his children Robert H. (Bob) Phillips and Mary P. Walter now manage the two plants. The employee total includes 80 local citizens. Company manufactured products are now shipped to all fifty states and overseas.
Vision
From our humble beginnings over eighty years ago, Edgecombe Furniture has always endeavored to provide the highest quality handcrafted pieces to a wide range of clientele. What began as a small mattress manufacturing company in the Depression era, has grown to be a multi-product, multi process operation deep in the heart of North Carolina.
At Edgecombe, we realize that our current level of success would not have been attainable without the expertise of our longtime professionals, as well as, the support and reliability of our longtime dealers and hospitality clientele. It is with their help that we have provided many families and businesses throughout the United States and abroad, with furniture that is both comfortable and luxurious for their homes and businesses.
With these thoughts in mind, our vision for the coming decade is to help provide this comfort to even more people by expanding our sales territory. It is our goal as a company to become a leading furniture provider in the Hospitality, Residential, and Government Contract industries, all without sacrificing our level of service to others and to our environment.
